I dont rock climb specficially but I do some very technical trail running. I previously had a fenix 5 plus and fenix 3HR both with sapphire screens. I took some wicked spills and have done quite a few 4 point scrambles during races and training. Neither screen ever even got a mark. I roughed up the bezels a bit but I expected that.

A BIG DISAPPOINTMENT. A week ago I bought a new Garmin Fenix 5x sapphire. Around 750Euro. Mind you, not a cheap watch!! i decided to buy this one after some research. It has an optical HR monitor at the back of the watch. I used a Polar A360 with similar technology. It works for the polar.
Link to album with pics below. First, some notes. The Delta Sapphire is Black DLC. The 7X solar sapphire is also black DLC. They do look the same on the case. The 7X bezel looks lighter because it is beveled and reflects light differently. The Delta bezel "steps down" from one level to the next whereas the 7X bezel is one continuous surface.
I went from the 5X Sapphire to the 7X Sapphire. Few things. The battery life is really nice. The back light is similar to the 5x, but the screen is larger. I have the backlight set to turn on with gesture all the time other than sleep. Works great. Surely the Epix will be brighter. I don't think you will have problems reading either one.
