I have used both Sigma lenses on Sony camera via adapter and found 60-600 to have great sharpness but AF wasn't good enougJh for BIF so I'm hoping it will work better on R5. Assuming a lens works It basically comes down to cost v's IQ - the 150-600 is cheapest option the 60-600 is almost double at £1400 and the canon 100-500 Fully agree. I started last year with the Sigma 150-600 c, I even had the Sigma 1401 TC. Both performed pretty well, but the lens is big and heavy. I could handhold the combo, but was a pain. The lens performed better at 550 than 600. I finally moved to the RF 150-500 + RF 1.4 and the combo is amazing. Easily the best lens I have ever owned. (1) Tamron 150-600 or (2) the Canon 70-200 2.8 II + Canon Extender EF 2X III. Obviously, buying the extender would be a lot cheaper and lighter than carrying around another heavy zoom. The Tamron would give me a little more reach, albeit the reviews say it's quite soft above 500mm. Still a little more reach vs. 400mm. How does the 2x extender affect the image quality. I like to shoot small birds, that are often far away. For this, I recently use the 1.4x extender and the 7DII. But often, the cropped picture is to small in my opinion. And that will only be with several of the center AF points. (The 5DIII is the only non-1D series camera to offer this, all others require f5.6 or larger.) As mentioned, putting a 2X (that "costs" two stops of light) on the 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 makes that into an effective 200-800mm f9-f11 lens. So when that registers with the camera, AF is turned Compatibility: Canon is quite vague here, and says: "The Extender EF 1.4x III is compatible with most telephoto and telephoto zoom lenses within Canon’s flagship professional L-series range, extending the focal length while only reducing the effective aperture of the lens by one stop." But have you thought of Sigma's or Tamron's 150-600 lenses? Compared to the 4.0/2xExtender combo you would get a similar or slightly better IQ but a much better aperture, AF and additional 200mm reach. I came to the conclusion that an 2x extender only makes sense in combination with Canon's 2.8 lens.
